Surprise Screening

Wednesday, January 04, 2006
So anyway, decided to catch a movie yesterday and when looking through the list of movies I saw something interesting playing at GV plaza. It was listed as "Surprise Screening." What it basically is is a movie screening where you didn't know what was playing until you actually sat down to watch it. Feeling adventurous, we (Zi and me) decided to take it on. Mainly because it was playing at a very special price of $5 per person and well.. we're cheapskates. Shortly after watching the movie, it was revealed that it was called, "Dreamer"

Dreamer stars Kurt Russell and Dakota Fanning. I'm sure you know Kurt Russell, Escape from LA and many other less than stellar movies. Dakota Fanning, child star, seen in movies like I am Sam and War of the Worlds. Based on a true story, Dreamer is about a family who stays on a horse farm that houses no horses and a horse named Soniadore which surprise, surprise, means Dreamer. Being another horse movie, I immediately think of the only other recent notable horse movie around, Seabiscuit, which starred Spiderman (Toby Maguire or something, can't remember the spelling) If you've seen Seabiscuit, you don't really need to watch Dreamer because its pretty much the same story with minor differences. Also, Spiderman is much more Pro than Kurt Russell. IF you have yet to watch Seabiscuit, you still probably shouldn't watch Dreamer and instead, buy the Seabiscuit VCD instead. Its not that Dreamer is a terrible show. It is in fact very enjoyable and Dakota Fanning is a delight to watch. However, Seabiscuit is just a much better movie and if you must only watch one horse movie (I generally assume not too many people want to watch multiple movies about horses), Seabiscuit will probably be a better choice.

There were a few scenes in the film that could have used a little better editting and better use of pauses. Of course I'm no film expert but this is just a personal opinion. Also, for a horse movie, I feel surprisingly little for the horse. The film didn't really make me care enough for the Soniadore (Incidentally played by a horse named Sacrifice. Serious) and I would suppose that in a horse movie, you would kinda want to make the horse another character. But in Dreamer, Soniadore feels like a living prop more than a character that you'll care about. Kinda like the car the main character drives. On the overall it really is just a Ho-Hum film. You could watch it if you were bored. There were memorable scenes though. Namely the Coffee scene and the Donut scene. Notice how in a horse movie, foodstuffs actually made more of an impact on me?

On the overall, I'd give Dreamer 6.5/10

Side note, maybe i'll start giving reviews on my site to entertain myself. =P
